Next, unwind on the beautiful Pacific Coast beaches and surrounding area. To top it all off, we enjoyed water activities along the coast, making this trip an unforgettable Costa Rican experience.
Day 1: Arrival in Costa Rica
Night stay: San Jose
Costa Rica has two international airports. The San Jose Airport (SJO) is the biggest international airport in Costa Rica and central in the country. The other is Guanacaste Airport (LIR), on the northwest side. If you are planning to visit San Jose, the vibrant capital city of Costa Rica, choose to fly from this airport. You will get more flight options as well, compared to Guanacaste Airport.
Upon arrival in San Jose, pick up your rental car and kick off your trip. The city is rich in culture and history. There are many museums, historical sites, and cathedrals to visit.
At dinner time, savor authentic Costa Rican and delicious cuisines from Latin America. A full day should be sufficient to get the feeling of the urban culture of Costa Rica before heading to the nature-rich countryside.
Day 2: La Fortuna Waterfall and Hot Springs

It’s about a 2-3 hrs drive from San Jose. Once you arrive at La Fortuna, check in to your hotel and enjoy the beautiful view of Arenal volcano, which is visible from almost every place in this town.

Day 4: Rio Celeste and Monteverde Cloud Forest

On the fourth day, wake up early and head toRio Celeste.It’s about 1 hour and 30 minutes from La Fortuna and on the way to Monteverde Cloud Forest.
It’s known for its turquoise blue water surrounded by thick, lush forest. It was the most picturesque waterfall we had ever seen. There is a small hike from the base to the waterfall; it may be slightly tricky for a novice hiker, but it’s definitely doable. Once you reach the fall, it’s all worth the effort. You can spend about 2-3 hours here and then head to Monteverde.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest is about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Rio Celeste. It’s one of the most fantastic places among Costa Rica’s natural wonders.
Begin your day with a guided tour of a localcoffee plantation, learning about the coffee-making process while sampling some of the finest Costa Rican coffee.
Day 5: Monteverde Hanging Bridges

Then, embark on anighttime nature walkto spot nocturnal animals, like giant tarantulas and rare orange-bellied trogon birds, in the Curi Cancha Reserve. Again, a guided tour is recommended. It’s worth your time and money in a place like Monteverde to not miss the true beauty this place holds.

We stayed atThe Westin Reserva Conchal at Playa Conchal Beach, a beautiful property on a white sandy beach and clear turquoise water, before heading back home. It’s in the Guanacaste and the North Pacific region of Costa Rica.
We relaxed at the resort in the morning, soaking in the sun and swimming co*cktails. In the afternoon, we visited the nearby famouscoffee and chocolate tour atCafé Tio Leo. Advance booking is recommended as these are sold out fast.
Day 7: Guanacaste and Surrounding Area
Night stay: Guanacaste
Visit the nearest beaches in the area; in Guanacaste, the other famous beaches that are close areFlamingo, Tamarindo, Sugar Beach, and Playa Grande.
We visited Flamingo and Tamarindo; both were amazing and had a lot of options for food and relaxation.
For nighttime, you can stay at the resort or check with hotel staff if any local event is happening close to your area. We found out that every Thursday, there is a festival at Tamarindo Beach called theTamarindo Night Market Festival.
It lights up the scene every Thursday evening from 6pm to 9pm, featuring live music acts, mesmerizing fire dancers, and entertaining clowns for the little ones. With a DJ spinning tunes, there’s plenty of opportunity to hit the dance floor and have a blast, all in a family-friendly atmosphere – and guess what? It’s totally free!
And when it comes to food, you’re in for a treat. You can savor flavors from around the globe thanks to a diverse selection of food trucks. Plus, you’ll find beautifully crafted souvenirs made right here in Costa Rica, along with a whole bunch of other awesome stuff to explore and enjoy. It’s an evening you won’t want to miss! We had a blast visiting the night festival and were glad we were there on Thursday to enjoy it.
Day 8: Water Activities and Ocean Excursions

There are many water activities here, from jet skiing and snorkeling to scuba diving. We went on a catamaran cruise along the coast; the views were stunning, and we watched many wildlife. We also had opportunities for snorkeling or swimming in secluded coves.
There is always something to do if you want to venture farther from the beach. Based on your location, you can visit the nearest rainforest towatch wildlife, hike, and even go for scenic ATV tours.
In the afternoon, we started a long drive back to San Jose to catch an early flight home. Alternatively, you can book a flight from Guanacaste Airport (LIR), only a few hours from the Pacific coast, depending on your location.
Day 9: Return to the Airport or Optional Extension
Finally, the 9-day journey came to an end. With so much to see and do in Costa Rica, there’s always the option to add more adventures to your itinerary, such as exploring the tranquil beaches of Uvita, venturing into the lush jungles of Tortuguero National Park, or wildlife encounters in Manuel Antonio National Park.
