A new premium rum is being released, backed by Eric Winter — the actor starring on ABC’s The Rookie. Palm Republic rum will come in both an aged and silver form, having been developed over the last two years to create a unique blend of flavors from across the Caribbean and Latin America.

“To me this is not just another celebrity spirit, this is a passion of mine for the past 20 years,” said Winter. “I fell in love with rum when I went on my first trip to Puerto Rico with my now wife Roselyn Sanchez. It was then that I started to appreciate all of the different nuances premium rum had to offer. I mean this when I say it, the real star here is our unique blend of rum that is Palm Republic! As it should be. It’s what today’s consumer deserves in this flooded market of celebrity spirits.”

The Silver variety of Palm Republic is 80 proof, and is a blend of rums from Jamaica and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has notes of banana, vanilla, and sugar cane, with a creamy texture and medium body.

The Aged variety is 92 proof, and is a blend of rums from Panama, Jamaica, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is aged for eight years in sherry casks, to develop notes of dark chocolate, caramel, and molasses. This is the more full-bodied of the two, with warm sugar notes and hints of spice.

The rums are made with no added flavors or colors, and the Palm Republic Rum brand was awarded a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Spirits competition. The brand is currently available on store shelves in Florida and can be shipped to other states in the U.S.

Pick up a bottle the next time you travel

Two new whisky collections from Chivas Brothers are on their way to release, but if you want to pick up a bottle from either, then you'll need to check your airport next time you're flying. The new releases are exclusive to "global travel retail" -- or duty-free to you and me.
Royal Salute Small Batch Collection
The first of the pair comes from Royal Salute, which is debuting its Small Batch collection. The idea is to showcase rare and unusual whiskies that have been aged for several decades in various casks. Eight whiskies are in the collection, all presented in distinctive purple packaging and each aged between 25 and 28 years. Some of the casks used include rye, French oak, and Pedro Ximénez sherry, and the bottles will sell for between $450 and $750.

“Each of the eight whiskies available in this Small Batch collection were matured in special casks which I have personally selected on my travels around the world," said Sandy Hyslop, master blender at Chivas Brothers. "This is a truly unique collection, with each individual whisky having a unique flavor profile, providing an array of choice to suit different preferences and open up new tasting experiences.”
Ballantine's Golden Hour
The second release is from Ballantine's, which is introducing a 23-year-old Golden Hour series. The series features blended Scotches aged for 23 years, with the first release aged in Cognac casks. This 40% abv bottle will be released first in travel retail in the Asia Pacific region, selling for $279.

Thanks to its high proof, the release promises a rich, full-bodied drinking experience. This whisky has been aged in European oak casks, including those used for Pedro Ximénez sherry, a Spanish variety of dark dessert wine, bourbon casks and American oak casks.

Everyone loves a Manhattan — but you should try it with rum

Try a Manhattan with a twist

When it comes to classic co*cktails, few are more iconic than the Manhattan. Popular since the 1800s, the combination of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and orange bitters has been delighting whiskey enthusiasts for decades and has seen a real resurgence in recent years as whiskey mania has swept the co*cktail scene.

But like all good co*cktails, the Manhattan is open to variations -- from using different types of vermouth to adding a dash of absinthe, there are plenty of ways to change up this classic stirred drink. However, one option that might sound sacrilegious to some but is well worth a try is ditching the whiskey all together, and replacing it with rum instead.
How to make a Rum Manhattan
The rum Manhattan combines 2 ounces of dark rum with 1 ounce of sweet vermouth, which is stirred together over ice. You can add a dash of either Angostura or orange bitters as you prefer, and strain into a co*cktail glass before garnishing with either an orange twist or the traditional cherry.
